Joan E. Murphy

Joan E. Murphy, 91, of Columbia City, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022 at North Woods Village. Born August 1, 1930 in Huntington, she was the daughter of Rex and Clara (Gardner) Morrett.

Growing up on the north side of Huntington, Joan attended  Huntington High School where she was a Majorette and involved with school athletics for all four years. She graduated with the Class of 1948 and went on to Ravenscroft Beauty College. On July 12, 1971, she married Dr. Edgar Murphy. Aside from being a hair dresser and phone operator during the 1960's, Joan worked as the office manager for her husband's Optometry practice in Columbia City. She was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, and the Shirts and Skirts Square Dance Group in Auburn. In her younger years, Joan enjoyed traveling and bowling. Joan found relaxation being outdoors, tending to her flowers and bird watching.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Dede (Tom) Altemus, Deb Stoppenhagen, and Sally (James) Baldridge; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Aside from her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Regan Stoppenhagen; brother, Charles Morrett; and  sister, Claribel Hall.

Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, March 25, 2022 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City with visitation one hour prior. Burial will take place at Oak Grove (Compton) Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given in memory to the Humane Shelter of Whitley County.
