Elizabeth Ruth Scheiber

April 23, 1930 — May 18, 2018

Elizabeth Ruth Scheiber, age 88, of Columbia City, IN, passed away at 7:06 am on Friday, May 18, 2018 at Parkview Randallia Hospital, Fort Wayne.

A few pieces of history that occurred in 1930s include being in the midst of the Great Depression, a gallon of gas was 10 cents and on April 23, 1930, Clarence William and Ruth Elizabeth (Harris) Hine welcomed the birth of Elizabeth Ruth, the second of five children into the family in Huntington, Indiana. Elizabeth attended local schools and graduated from Jackson Twp. Commissioned High School in Roanoke with the Class of 1948. She met Robert Francis Scheiber at a dance prior to graduation and on June 26, 1948 they were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Roanoke, Indiana.

Elizabeth worked at International Harvester briefly and volunteered at Whitley County Hospital. She was a member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church and Rosary Sodality.
Throughout her adult life Elizabeth was very active in church events and meetings and card club until her Mother passed away in 2005. After that she spent most of her time listening to 106.3 Redeemer Radio, a Catholic radio station, praying the rosary, Sunday mass on 55.1 and attending family get togethers. Her family was very close and she was always the organizer to help her Mother in all family events on the family farm and beyond. She always called or sent cards to make sure no one was forgotten on their birthdays, sickness, or bereavement until her stroke in 2014.

If you went to her house for a visit, she would always have good food waiting. She was a great cook that always served a balanced meal with a dessert to follow. She loved flowers, flower arranging, and gardening. Elizabeth was a garden of many colors herself. She was a very creative thinker and creative supply collector. Her daughter remembers when she was young in the 1950's and 60's, when it was time for her Mother to have card club she would always try to find a special dessert. Elizabeth would get all dressed up in a dress with pearl necklace and earrings, have cloth tablecloths on the card tables with flowers, little cups with bridge mix and nuts, favors and place cards.

She would be described as always strong for others and strong willed. She loved her children and friends. If you were having a crisis she's the one you would want on your side, but if you were wrong in her eyes she would definitely let you know. Elizabeth spent a month in North Carolina in 2016, at 86. She enjoyed helping her granddaughter unpack moving boxes and worked the whole day! Her son, Jonathan, remembers being told to turn his music down as to not disturb the neighbors. Elizabeth will always be remembered in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her children Roland (Debra) Scheiber of Hampstead, NC, Jonathan Scheiber of Columbia City, and Rita (Robert) Creech of Fort Wayne; grandchildren Melissa (Richard) Hartman of Hampstead, NC, Adam (Alecia) Scheiber, Melinda (Trey) Odom, and Brianne Scheiber, all of Wilmington, NC; great-grandchildren Davis Hartman, Karli Hartman, Kennedy Odom, and Krew Odom; sister Bonita Gillum of Fort Wayne; sister-in-law Wanda Hine of Lafayette, IN; brother-in-law Jack Smith of Columbia City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Scheiber, infant daughter Susan Kathleen Scheiber, sisters M. Marie Smith and Ramona Brown, and brother Harris Hine.
