Jean McDevitt, 97, of Columbia City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022 at Miller's at Oak Pointe. Born April 24, 1925 in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Lewis and Ethel (Tucker) Miller.
Growing up in Union Township of Whitley County, Jean attended Coesse High School and on April 14, 1945, she married Norman McDevitt. Along with being a homemaker and farm wife, Jean also had worked at Phelps Dodge, Farmsworth and Blue Bell in Columbia City. She had been a faithful member of the Grace Lutheran Church where she was involved with the Alter Guild, Home Communion, and the Food Bank. She also volunteered at the Whitley Memorial Hospital and the Bloodmobile.
"I love my God, my church, my husband, and my children. I really love children. As ours were growing up, there were always a lot of extra children here playing ball in the barn, swimming and playing baseball in the pasture." There is a destiny that makes us brothers, No one goes his way alone, All we put into the life of others, Comes back in to our own.
Jean is survived by her children, Nick (Sue) McDevitt, Joyce (Rick) Berry, Keith McDevitt, Debra Pratt; daughter-in-law, Dawn McDevitt; grandchild, Bobbi Jean (Brian) Scott, Aaron (Cathy) McDevitt, Jenne (Ryan) Nix, Donny (Amy) Berry, Scott (Brandy) McDevitt, Colby (Heidi) McDevitt, Brady (Amanda) Pratt, Dr. Seth (Jill) McDevitt and Tiffany Oliver; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman McDevitt; son, Stephen McDevitt; son-in-law, Ron Pratt; daughter-in-law, Cheryl McDevitt; twin granddaughters, Dianna and Dionna Berry; and great-granddaughter, Marissa J. Scott.
Funeral services will be 11 am Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Matthew Converse will be officiating. Burial will take place at Union Township Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
