Virgil Mathias Johanns, age 85, of Columbia City, IN, passed away at 1:09 am on Monday November 22, 2021, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Born on January 28, 1936, in Paulding, OH, he was the son of Anthony and Albertine (Voirol) Johanns.
Virgil attended Monroeville High School and graduated with the Class of 1954. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Virgil was an Allen County resident until 1974, when he moved to Whitley County. Virgil worked as a shop manager and mechanic for France Stone Company/Lehigh Hanson, Inc., Fort Wayne, for over 30 years.
Virgil was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1063, Columbia City and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Albion. He enjoyed travelling, going to museums, and telling jokes.
Survivors include his children James (Elsa Manzanares) Johanns of Dallas, TX, Lisa (Phil) Richmond, Joni (Dave) Smith, Shari (Brian) Shively, Timothy Schaper, Robert (Stacey) Schaper, all of Columbia City, Tina (Tim) Longacre of Churubusco, and Patrick (Mary) Schaper of Albion; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Joyce Maroney of Fort Wayne, and Robert Johanns of Monroeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Starr Johanns, brothers Joseph, Alden, and Tony Johanns, sisters Anita Frame and Anna Marie Woodring, and daughter Terressa Eachon.
Funeral services for Virgil will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday November 24, 2021, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with calling one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
Memorial contributions in memory of Virgil may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
